Science taught as a list of facts to memorise is dull. Taught as a set of questions people argued about, it is hard to put down.

Plenty of students who describe science as boring are perfectly happy to spend an hour explaining how something works. The subject is rarely the problem. The way it arrives usually is.
Every fact was once an argument
A textbook presents the conclusion and omits the century of disagreement that produced it. Restore the question — why did anyone think otherwise, and what settled it — and the same content becomes a story rather than a list.
It explains things the student has already noticed
Refraction is abstract. Why a spoon looks bent in a glass of water is not. Starting from something already observed gives the formula somewhere to attach.
It gives you permission to be wrong productively
Science is one of the few subjects where being wrong is a documented, respectable stage of the process. Students who understand that stop treating a failed prediction as a personal failure.
Ways to make it click
- Ask 'what would we expect to see if this were false?' for any claim.
- Do the demonstration before reading the explanation.
- Connect each formula to a situation the student has actually seen.
- Follow one scientist's story rather than one chapter's contents.
