How to Find the Right Career for Yourself

Choosing a career at seventeen is a decision made with very little information. A more useful approach than the standard aptitude quiz.

Student considering different career paths

Most career advice given to students in Class 11 and 12 assumes the answer already exists somewhere inside them and only needs to be discovered by the right questionnaire. In practice, very few people identify a career by introspection alone. They find it by narrowing, testing and revising.

Separate the subject from the job

Enjoying Biology in school and enjoying the daily work of a doctor are different things. Before committing to a stream, find out what the actual working week looks like — the paperwork, the hours, the parts nobody puts in the brochure.

Look for the tasks you lose time in

A more reliable signal than 'favourite subject' is the kind of task that makes an afternoon disappear. Arguing a position, fixing something broken, organising other people, working out why a number is wrong — these transfer across many careers.

Test cheaply before you commit expensively

A short course, a summer project, a few weeks shadowing someone or a small piece of freelance work will tell you more than another month of thinking. The aim is to make the decision reversible for as long as possible.

Take constraints seriously, but honestly

  • What can your family realistically fund, and over how many years?
  • Which entrance exams does this path actually require?
  • How mobile are you willing to be for work?
  • What income do you need within five years, not twenty?

Expect to revise the decision

Very few working adults are doing what they chose at seventeen. Choosing a direction that keeps several doors open is usually better than choosing the option that looks optimal on paper but closes everything else.

The question is not 'what am I meant to do' but 'what should I try next, and how will I know if it is working'.
